What is presence?

The Power of Presence: Continuing the journey beyond the ego
Following my last blog on the ego, writing about presence felt like a natural next step, since the two topics often overlap.
In the rush of everyday life, it’s easy to feel disconnected—caught between what already happened and what’s still ahead. But there’s a quiet, nourishing space that always waits beneath the noise: the present moment.
Eckhart Tolle calls this state presence—a deep awareness of life as it unfolds, right here and now. It’s not something to chase; it’s something you return to. Presence is where your mind softens, your body exhales, and your true self begins to bloom.
What does it mean to be present?
Presence is the stillness beneath thought—the calm that exists even when the world feels chaotic. When you are present, you’re not replaying the past or rushing into the future. You’re simply here, fully alive in this breath, this step, this moment.
You might feel it while watching sunlight move across your floor, or when you pause to really listen to someone’s voice. Presence invites us back to the richness of now.
Presence is like the gaze of a baby’s eyes — clear, open, untouched.
It is pure awareness.
No thoughts about the past or the future.
No judgments.
No need for recognition.
No desire to control.
No comparison with others.
Just seeing. Just being.
Why the present moment heals
Much of our stress comes from living in “psychological time”, worrying about what’s next or regretting what’s gone. But life only ever happens now. When you return to the present, your nervous system relaxes. You reconnect with your breath, your senses, and the quiet intelligence of your body.
Try this simple practice:
Take one slow, conscious breath. Feel the air enter and leave.
Notice the stillness underneath.
That stillness is presence.
Even ten seconds of awareness can often shift your entire energy.
Living and blooming from presence
Let’s be honest, being present is easier said than done.
In everyday life, staying present can feel like a challenge. Work demands your attention. Your spouse needs you. Your children need you. Responsibilities pile up. Even when everything goes according to “plan,” the mind runs ahead or lingers behind.
And then there are the moments when life doesn’t go according to plan.
When you carry the weight of a difficult childhood.
When health issues enter your world.
When you lose someone you love.
When addiction touches your life, your own, your child’s, your partner’s, someone close to you.
When trauma reshapes the way you experience safety and trust.
In those moments, presence can feel almost impossible.
But perhaps presence is not about doing it perfectly.
Perhaps it is about gently returning, again and again, to this breath, this moment, this small space of awareness. Even if only for a few seconds.
In those moments, presence may not remove the pain.
But it softens the suffering.
It lowers the intensity of the mental fight.
It creates a small space between you and the storm.
It allows you to breathe inside what feels unbearable.
Presence does not deny reality.
It helps you meet it, one moment at a time.
Maybe presence is not the absence of struggle.
Maybe it is the willingness to meet life as it is, with honesty and compassion.
When you live from presence, you move through life with greater ease and flow. You make clearer decisions, your relationships feel more genuine, and even the simplest moments become meaningful.
Presence doesn’t remove life’s challenges—but it changes how you meet them. You become grounded, centered, and open. Like a plant rooted deeply in the soil, you can bend with the winds of change without breaking.
The blooming mind body practice
At Blooming Mind Body, we believe that every mindful breath, every pause, and every gentle return to presence is a seed for growth.
So next time you catch yourself lost in thought, gently return to your breath, your body, your senses. Be patient and kind with yourself. Those thoughts and inner voices didn’t form overnight — they were shaped by your experiences throughout your life. So don’t expect presence to happen overnight either. Most people don’t arrive there instantly. It’s a gradual unfolding. Trust the process. The present moment is always here, ready to support you.
Because this moment is enough.
And so are you. 🌿
